Recently, there was a kerfuffle on a podcasters group over on Facebook. Basically it was a Podcast award announcement and a member of the group complained about having to have an RSS feed on their site to have a chance to win. That got the ball rolling and rolling it did. Lots of thoughts and opinions were tossed about, toes were stepped on, eyes gouged, at one time I think I saw Rick Flair body slamming someone. Got so bad that the original message was removed. Podcasters, yeah we are a little opinionated.
Yet, this is why looking to groups and online communities are great for finding topics for your particular show. Many times unexpected show ideas crop up much like this. The main topic of this discussion was why you should have a RSS feed on your front page of your site, or you even need a website for your podcast? Both of these tie into each other.
RSS feed in a nutshell is a special file created by your CMS that points news readers to the most current content on your site. This allows for your information to be syndicated to your readers of your blog and this same file format is what allows for podcatchers to see that you have put out a new show and retrieve the show and show notes. It looks like a mess if you try to look at an RSS feed in your browser, and that is because it wasn’t meant to be read by people.
Why Have The RSS Feed
If the file isn’t suppose to be seen by people then why do you want this on your site? Why not just give iTunes your feed and be done with it? This is the discussion. If you look at your statics. you see that the vast majority of your shows are downloaded by some type of Apple product. Be it an iPhone iPad or iPod there is some type of Apple Core Media or iTunes client grabbing your feed. That isn’t the largest mobile device out there. that belongs to Android operating system created and put out by Google. The Android devices out number iOS by a huge number, but only claim a quarter of the downloads of shows. I put a good portion of the blame for this on Google. Yes, they could make it easier for podcasts to be found, they are in the search business. Yet I also put some blame of the podcast producers who only think of iTunes.
There is more to the world than Apple products. I know. I am an Android user and I run into this very problems many times. I find a podcast I want to check out. I search Pocketcasts and pull up nothing. So I then do a search for the shows website. More often than not I find the site and then look for the RSS feed. If I am not able to find it then I go to the podcast page and look there for the RSS feed, and several times I still dont find it. This is where a critical decision is made, How badly do I want to hear this show? If I dont care that much , then my search ends there. If I want to listener to the show pretty badly then I will check to see if it is a WordPress site. When it is then I will try to get the feed by typing in domainname.com/feed/podcast or if that doesn’t work domainname.com/feed. If either of these paths dont work, then they do not want listeners that bad and I will just drop the search. I will go through a lot more work to get a show than your typical person. Most will stop if they can not find it on their Podcast manager search feature.
I have made it a mission that when I find a podcast I would like to listen too and there is no findable RSS feed to educate that person. I try to contact them. Let that show host know of us special cases. Many have responded some even didn’t realise there was a world outside of iTunes.
This isn’t the only reason either Window phone users their podcasts app actually uses BING and it will only pull up podcasts RSS feeds not the show. so you need to let Bing know how to find your RSS feeds too. RSS feeds are important, they may not look pleasing to you but there is a purpose to that file. In fact you don’t have a podcast unless you have an RSS Feed. So, have a link somewhere on your homepage the more prominent the better. IF for whatever reason you can’t have it there, then put it on your Podcast shows page.
I have heard why do you need to have a website for your show? Well in truth you don’t you can use what is automatically generated by your media host, and it works great especially if you are using a service like Libsyn They create an RSS feed for you automatically. But what do you tell your listeners? How do new people searching for your topic find you? They will find you, but you are not making it easy for them. You are relying on nothing more than word of mouth and happenstance. Where do you want your fans to go so that they are able to get your information? You going to use a Subdomain? that works it is a little more for your to remember. Is that tumblr with or without an ‘E’? Is it Blogger or Blogspot? So, make it easier at least get an address and own a little bit of your brand. You might be surprised as to how many people are actually looking for you.
There are Android users who consume podcasts be mindful of us we are trying to tell the world.
With a podcast, you want people to be able to find your show. One of the best and essential directories you want to have your show listed in, is iTunes. Now you can just put your information into the iTunes or you can enter the needed information the correct way and increase you chances of being found when a person searches for a show or your topic.
How to set up
Start off with a good foundation. This is the your setup on your blog. If you are using WordPress then more than likely you will be using the PowerPress plugin. If you are using Tumblr or another free blogging service then you are probably using FeedBurner to tag your feed. In both you want to make use that you have plenty of keywords in your show title, tagline, and description. There are these three place you can place your keywords and help your show appear before more potential audience members. Yet, Dont do “Keyword Stuffing” and it is evident when a person is keyword stuffing. Keyword stuffing is when a person tries to place as many keywords as they possibly can into each field. So, do not go overboard on the keyword use your key words and put them into proper sentences. That actually turns me off from a podcast when I see “Super Mega Social Media Podcast | podcast social media Facebook twitter Google plus weedeater lawn care hot russian chicks” I see something like that, I get the red flag that the podcast host may not know all that they are talking about and are just looking to garner hits and sell you something.
So, You might want to use something more along the lines of “Super Mega Social Media Podcast | We are the Experts on all Social Media platforms.” With a Tag line of “Keep up with Social Media Jones” And keep that up with the description. Tell a story in your description. Remember, you are selling here, you are giving your pitch to the listener as to why they should listen to your podcast. So, explain who, what and why. If need be, get inspiration from your about page.
Where do you put the Title, description, and all that jazz?
So, where do you put these magical settings? That will be in one of two places. Depending on which tagging service you are using, PowerPress or Feed Burner.
For PowerPress users you settings will be in the PowerPress menu in your Admin Settings. In PowerPress you will see a tab at the top that is labeled iTunes, and we will also be doing some edits in the Feeds tab. First the Feeds Tab. In this tab we are going to the “Feeds Settings” and the two fields that need to be edited are the Feed Title and the Feed Description. The Title is your show title for example my iTunes title is currently

It has the keywords I want in there without it being spammy, that is because it is worked into an actual sentence. The Description here is a lot of the same
Podcasting is exploding! It seems that everyone is starting a podcast. Yet, many people end up doing it wrong. They follow sales pitchy blog posts about how to start a podcast in 4 easy steps only to find out that the “easy steps” have enormous gaps that are missing critical details. These details that can block you from your audience. I am glad you have the podcasting bug and there is a LOT of information that you need to know as you learn to podcast, but that information is not difficult to learn. This show will help you plan out your show, build your audience, and explain the power of podcasting. While talking about podcasting tips, and podcasting strategy. I desire nothing more than to help you realise that this is a new medium, that is different from any other medium out there because you will have an amazing relationship with someone who WANTS to listen to you.
The keywords I want people to find me with are found in this description like Starting a podcast, how to start a podcast, and learn to podcast. Now the reason that these are phrases instead of keywords like social media, or podcasting equipment. That is because, long form searches are becoming more and more popular. People want to search more by phrases and as iTunes improves their search algorithm I see it going to a more phrase based search. While at the same time iTunes still does most of it searches by actual keywords. There for you want to make sure that you do have those keywords into the description and title.
The next tab is the iTunes tab and this tab you want to make sure you get this filled out properly because it can cost you some listeners. Since this is the case Lets go over each field starting from the top down.
- iTunes Subscription URL – This is the URL that you are given when you are accepted into iTunes. It typically look like https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/name-of-your-show/id000000000 If you have lost that URL, don’t worry go into iTunes and search the store for your show. once you find it and you go to your in-store page right-click (For Windows users) and choose “Copy URL”. That is the URL you will need. Paste the URL into this field and remove the “?mt=2” at the very end you really don’t need it.
- iTunes Program Subtitle – This is your Tag line another good place to insert some good keyword rich description
- iTunes Program Summary – More space for Keywords but just don’t get spammy about it. Again make sure it fits our podcast and the keywords are actual parts of the sentence.
- iTunes Episode Summary – Leave “Optimize iTunes Summary from Blog Posts” unchecked
- iTunes Program Keywords – Here you are limited to 12 keywords separated by commas. So, choose the best 12 keyword you can think of. and if you think of a better on you can always trade out a lesser keyword for the better keyword
- iTunes Category – This is the genre of your show. what category does your show fit into, and choose the most specific. We know your show is a podcast so unless it deals with podcasting do not put it in the podcasting category.
- iTunes Category 2 – Another category your podcast would fit into
- iTunes Category 3 – Rinse and repeat with another category your show would fit into.
- iTunes Explicit – If you use lots of blue words in each podcast episode. You will need to choose the explicit tag. If you make an effort to not have any swearing, in your show, then I would use the Clean tag
- iTunes Talent Name – This is your name.
- iTunes Email – This is the email address you can be reached at and is required
- iTunes New Feed URL – You will only use this if you are changing your RSS feed
Next you will need to go to the tab Art Work.
- iTunes Image – This image should be your album art at 1400 X 1400 pixels place the URL that the image can be found at
- iTunes Episode Image – this is if you have episode specific images you are wanting to use.
- RSS2 Image – again use your album art but keep it at 300 x 300 even though the info on the settings says you can use your iTunes album art. Not the best because 1400 x 1400 is huge and when you view your feed in a rss rendering it will take up your whole screen and force your listeners to have to scroll down a ways before they see your episodes.
Be Yourself! This is actually a node to the previous episode On personal branding and how people can tell a fake. There is an article that is talking about how the rapper Eminem has just rocketed out of the gates with his new album while Lady Gaga’s newest release fizzled and is laying spent in the gutter. The reason is because people don’t really like fake people. There is a quote from the article that sums it up.

Or in other words if you are authentic and your show displays your passion, people will can not help themselves but be attracted. People like passion, that is what draws them to your show.
Now many people who use iTunes they there is a small flaw with how iTunes is set up. trying to find all of the comments to your show is cumbersome. you have to scroll down to the bottom click the flag and change to another country to see if there are any comments listed. One guy saw this problem and took action and created Comment cast. it took all of the comments and ratings and put them all together in one place so that it was easy to find. Except it was Mac only so us windows users were still left to the hard way of gathering comments. That is till now. The makers of Comment cast are dropping commentcast and starting up a web app called Reviewcast.io and this is the solution for everybody. you will be able to get your last 25 comments emails to you for free for now, no mater what OS you use.
Feedburner is an RSS feed redirector, and rose to popularity as blogging starting becoming popular. Feedburner was a way for people with blogs to get stats on who was reading their posts through a new web service called RSS, or Rich Site Summary. Since with RSS, people were not actually going to the site they are just looking through a news reader or aggregator, Bloggers turned to a service like FeedBurner. Feed Burner would then let bloggers know how many people each day read their posts and get a rough idea as to how many people were subscribed to their blog’s RSS feed.
From There Google bought Feedburner in 2007 and added podcasting tags to the line up and the service started being used by podcasters to find out how many listeners the podcast hosts could possibly have and what countries was it most popular in. The service was good for podcasters because one they didn’t have to find a way to enter the needed iTunes tags into their RSS stream before Pod press and Power Press came onto the scene. Feedburner would do that automagicly and all you did was direct your RSS feed to Feedburner and it would give you a new RSS feed that you would share with the world.
What are uses for Feedburner
These days Feedburner is still used by bloggers and many podcasters. Not just new guys but good deal of the original podcasters use Feedburner for a clue as to how their shows fair and for the ability to change their feed url without loosing their audience. Which Feedburner is a good service to utilize if you are using a free service like WordPress.org, Blogger, tumblr, or some other blogging platform.
Feedburner is commonly used for blogging and podcasting subscription stats. A podcaster can find out from what countries people are listening. If you use a free platform Feedburner allows you to put in the iTunes RSS tags needed for your show to be in iTunes. What Rss Client your listeners are using allows you to customize the feed with some extra tags like geo tags or making your feed readable in a browser. You can edit the description of feed. There are lots of customizing options you can do inside of feedburner
That is all great so why is it not recommended that podcasters use Feedburner if it does all that and more? The answer to that is Google. Now, yes Google does provide great services and then they also use to provide great services but recently they have started closing many different popular services that were not making any money. With Google being a company that is their primary objective, but none the less Google has grabbed peoples attention by closing some very popular services. The big one that happened with in the year is Google reader. This was Google solution to the RSS aggregators. When Google started up the Reader service it killed, and some would argue all, the RSS reader programs that were available to download. Many adjusted by just tying onto Google reader and let Google do all the heavy lifting. Then in 2013 there was a shock through the Podcasting community because the main way most bloggers and podcasters got their news for their specific niche was through Google reader. This was very sudden and out of the blue.
This got people to look for why and the reason were also lining up with Feedburner. It hasn’t been updated in a while. many of the support services have been close Feedburner Japan lost its domain, and listening to a particular camp Google was going to shut Feedburner down in a couple of months . Well At the time of this release Feedburner is still up and running. Will it close? Possible it really is not making any money for Google, but I would argue a that close to half if not more of the blogging community still is tied to feedburner for subscription stats. Yet, Google did enable there to be permanent redirects for you feedburner feed. Which means they may be closing it soon. Maybe…
Should podcasters use FeedBurner?
That depends, are you going the free route?If so then yes because you might have to change your RSS feed a few times if you decide to invest in your show by purchasing a domain or you change platforms. If you have your own domain and you want maybe a little different view of your subscribers then ok know that there is an out if they do close the doors.
But personally I would not recommend it.because it is just to unknown why deal with the uncertainty of a service you really do not need. There are podcasting stats that will give you more information about your listeners, and a few are free or cost very little. For tagging your feed Blubrry’ s PowerPress has everything covered. The only thing Feedburner is really good for now a days is the RSS redirect, and if you have the other items you really don’t need the redirect.
What to do if you are using feedburner and you want to get out?
Close the Account and this will create a redirect to your real RSS feed. Yet, this will only work for those checking the site so iTunes should update their feed but what if you have listeners who use a different podcaster? This is the argument for having a mailing list. SO that if something happens then you can help your podcast listeners out by telling them that your feed address has changed and they need to update that feed.
Also you want to set up the iTunes redirect in Powerpress just as a Cover your Tail move Since most of your listeners come from the iTunes Directory. In the Admin section of your WordPress Site go to PowerPress and choose the Settings, and in Setting chose the iTunes Tab here you will see
“Set iTunes New Feed URL”
Here you will get a big scary warning. Now this warning should be heard and fully understood. cause if you do mess up you will basically loose all of your audience. After accepting the warning you will have a space you can enter your Feed URL which it should be
If you are not sure what your feed is then go to the feed tab and you will see your special podcast only feed and copy the url and paste it into the iTunes New Feed URL. Save and you are pretty much set after you let your listeners know and I would also as another level of cover the ol’ posterior by making a blog post too, that way if you have someone who doesn’t read emails wills till be able to get the information.

If you are starting a podcast and you are wanting to know how many people are “listening” Use Blubrry if you are using a media host other than Libsyn you get your basic information for free and if you want deeper details then it is only $5 a month. If you have some type of aversion to BluBrry then you can also use Podtrac though I don’t feel their information is as detailed as Blubrry.
More celebrities getting into podcasting Ice T is starting a show called Ice-T: Final Level Ice T Is producing a bi-Monthly show with a friend of his. He will be doing what celebrities can do and talk in general formats, or not have a show about hip-hop it will be a show about News Stories, Video Games, Politics and other generalities.
You are hearing about podcasting more and more each day. Hearing about this person starting a podcast and that person is becoming very well known for his podcast. Should you learn to podcast? What should your podcast be about? Where to start? What questions should be asked? Is there money in Podcasting, if you are a business? I will aim at answering these. So that you may be able to make a good decision on whether you should invest in time and money to learn to podcast.
Why even start a podcast?
The reasons for podcasting is as numerous as podcasts. That’s because each person, and business have a very unique objective. Podcasts do create a few effects that people desire to achieve. First, learning to podcast will help you become an expert in your field. If you want to be a thought leader in a particular field doing a podcast is a great strategy. Podcasting is different from just blogging, though you will be blogging also. Your audience is able to hear the different inflections in your voice and know you are passionate about your topic. From that aspect, your audience will see you as the expert.
The other effect is that you want to work with your “Competition”. You will have a head start on the others who are late to the game. Many times your “competitors” will give up just because they see that you have already started and are 5 shows in the can. More “competitors” will give up when they see that there are 50 shows available, and you will then find out that you don’t have any competitors. Even if there are other shows talking about your very same topic. You will find advantages in working with them. Invite them on your show. You will find yourself looking to talk to the people who are in your field sharing their expertise. In other words you ware helping your competition to help you. Many podcasters have started using the word Co-opetition. Because they are cooperating with the people who they are in direct competition with. From these conversations most podcasters develop lasting friendships and bonds. So, Eventually you will see that there is no competition in podcasting.
With an engaged audience you will be able to find out who is listening. Learn about what your audience likes, the challenges they face, or in other words the most valuable data almost any advertising pays dearly for, and your audience is giving it to you for free. Because you are giving them so much value in the information you are providing. The listeners to your podcast will find a way to pay you back, if anything to say thank you.
Learn to Podcast
Where should you start when deciding to podcast? First there are two basic branches of podcasting those who will PodFade, or podcasts that no longer are producing shows, and those that are still producing podcast shows on schedule. From these two there is a discernible reason for 90% of the shows stopping. Lack of passion and direction. This goes for shows that are created by the hobbyist and the business based programs.
So, you want to make the decision as to what you want your show to be about. What type of value are you wanting to give to your customers/listeners? How are you going to convey that passion, that drive you have, for whatever it is you are wanting to podcast about? Once you have narrowed that down and you know what your show is going to be about then you can learn to podcast. If you find your fire, the path will be lit.
Learning to podcast is not hard. Most people over think the topic or the show and cause paralysis through analyses. In other words, They never get out of the planning stages. With podcasting being as mighty of a media wave, that it is growing into. You want find out how to podcast to the best of your budget and ability. Don’t worry so much about the quality of your equipment. Yes, it is good to have good equipment but not as important as your message. Your message is your product in the podcasting arena. The most valuable item is your thoughts and views of your show. Don’t fall in to the trap of broadcast media. Trying to appease as many people as you can, it is better to podcast in as fine of a niche as you can. Doing this will create an audience that is more engaged than any television or radio show. With a very detailed niche your audience will find high value in each podcast episode you produce. By providing your podcast audience with the value of your show, they will reciprocate that value back to you.
So, you have decided you want to podcast. You found your passion. you have gone as fine of a niche as you think you can. How do you start? How do you podcast? There are many ways you can get your show up and running. You can take a combination of two paths and both are highly recommended.
As many people, you can learn to podcast through the avenue of self taught trial and error. You can also gather information on proper podcasting techniques and practices by listening to other podcasters who talk about the craft, as in Podcasts about podcasting. These podcasters have great knowledge and insight about the world of podcasting. Their finger is always on the pulse of podcasting events, and have ways around common problems in podcasting.
Having people help you learn to podcast is another way you can have consulting sessions with known Podcasting coaches or take online classes. Though online courses can, at times, be rather expensive, many people believe they have invested good money for the service and would gladly do it again. Online podcasting courses do help in getting the information you need and helping you learn to podcast quicker than listening to podcasts about podcasts.
There is a 3rd way of learning to podcast and that is in a mix of the first two. You can join some forums about podcasting. Look for Meet up’s that center around podcasting and find people who can help you as you learn to podcast. These people will be able to give you fairly real time feed back as to what to improve.

If you learn to podcast how rich are you going to get? If there money in podcasting? What is your ROI?

You podcast, itself is not going to make any money. You may get a few dollars here and there but growing filthy stinking rich? Nope, that is a very rare bird to get. Adam Corolla, Leo Laport, these guys are able to make money from their shows because they brought an audience with them. Marc Maron again he had a comedy act before grabbing a microphone and recording.
For business’ this is a tough item to get around your head. And understood the old model of not interested unless it becomes an revenue stream means most businesses will not even try to podcast. This is good for you because podcasting is more of a value generator than a revenue generator. When you learn to podcast you are able to engage your audience, and do so in ways that you would never thought were possible. having your customers become fans. How many advertisers do you now can say you will develop a fan base? Not many if any I am sure. Yet, that is actually what happens when your business is podcasting about a valuable topic. Your listeners become fans. Fan want to buy your products and services. So No you cant make money off of podcasts but you can make money because of your podcast
For the individual person who is podcasting about what they like the benefits can not only be having people who are fans but but also your show can lead to dream jobs and opportunities never thought of before. Which can lead to an increase in money. This again is because you will be seen as the expert. You are able to share your knowledge with everyone else.
Now many people ask about sponsors. these are rare things at the moment also. This is because of the challenge of measuring the audience size. Analytic companies are finding better ways to measure how popular shows are becoming but even then the ad agencies are still running on the old models of broadcasting hitting millions of non-engaged audience members, instead of looking at hundreds of highly engaged listeners. So more and more are coming onboard that is still a little ways away. Most podcasters these days make a little money off of the affiliate programs. Which is another option you can go to help pay for your podcast.
When you learn to podcast for yourself or for your business. It is good to have a clear plan of what your show is going to be about. Clearly define your niche. Learn from those before you, so you wont make any costly mistakes. Use the resources online while getting current up to date information from the thought leaders because even though they are your competition they will also be happy to help you. Learn to podcast, find that “Fire in the Belly” and tell the world about it.
Wheew! After hours of frustration and listening to your own voice. You have your show finished. You have converted the raw audio to a MP3 format, have your intro music and outro music set just where you want it. So, how to you get it you your listeners?
That is the objective for this week. How to make your show accessible to the world. the key is with a little three letter word that now one really knows what it means, Mystery key is called RSS. Most people think it means Really Simple Syndication and others say it is Rich Site Summary or RDF Site Summary. The name is not important other than knowing that it is called RSS. because most Podcast directories will ask for your RSS “feed”.
What is an RSS feed?
According to Wikipedia,
RSS uses a family of standard web feed formats to publish frequently updated information: Blog Entries, News Headlines, Audio, Video. An RSS document (called a “feed””web feed”, or “channel”) includes full or summarized text, and metadata, like publishing date and authors name
In other words it is a file that acts as the town crier for your website. When your site is updated the people who are subscribed to your feed are notified of the update and they can get your information without having to go to the web site repeatedly. The different directories that your podcast is going to be listed on they want to be told when there is a update to your podcast.
There is a lot of information that is in the RSS feed you will not find useful, most of it helps to categorize and sort the information out so that it becomes easier for you to read in your news reader, or your Podcatcher. Yet if you look and are able to understand what you are looking for, you can see some particular information. Like the name of your show, some tags used for iTunes, Location of the MP3 files and much more. For all of this work correctly you will need to validate
Validating your feed
Validating your feed is the easiest way to determine that your RSS feed to going to be read by all the different directories. There are times that the feed will get messed up and cant be read by iTunes or some other directory.Often the cause of problems is using Microsoft word as your editor. This works great for finding misspelled words but not so good for Feeds. this is because of the hidden characters that Word and some other word processors. These are normally associated with the grammatical characters that are used. Word is not the only culprit, the glorious plugin will at times cause problems with other plugins or incompatibilities that affect the WordPress feed. So if you are using Microsoft Word to edit your show notes then after you release the show you will want to check your Feed. Also, Check it if you have recently installed a new plug in. Best way to verify that your feed is good. Use the Feed Validator
Feed Burner – Should you use it?
Now a few years ago the majority of podcasters used a service from Google called Feed burner. This service is an RSS redirector that helped bloggers and podcasters find out how many people were subscribed to their site in very broad and inaccurate terms. The subscriber amount was never very accurate but Feed burner does offer a good bit of help especially if you are going the free route.
A camp divided
There are two sets of podcasters those who are using feed burner and those who did but are now leery of Google and worried about the search engine closing a very valuable service that bloggers and podcasters both use.
Lets first look at the against camp. These people have seen Google recently close some very popular and valuable services. For instance there is Google Reader which was very popular with the bloggers and podcasters because The reader was the source of the news and topics. Yet Google closed this service earlier this year. The reasons are up for debate but either way the shuttering made many people who use feed burner very nervous and have stopped using Feed Burner.
Then there are people who see the closing as something that was needed and was expected., though they do not believe that Feed Burner is in any danger of being closed this year or next, due to the fact that there are so many bloggers that use Feed Burner it would not be wise for Google to close. Yet in the same breath I will refer back to Google Reader. So, it is really at your discretion as to use Feed Burner. You can use it if you like but just know you might one day find your feed gone.
The most important Directories you should submit to.
Apple iTunes – This is the 800 pound gorilla in the podcasting community. They are the first to have a widely accepted podcast directory that followed on the popularity of the iPod and iPhone. Besides being just the directory for iTunes it’s API’s are allow it to be the directory of several podcatchers, iOS and Android.
Zune – This may seem a little odd to have a somewhat dead MP3 player’s directory as an essential. This is because The Zune market place is not just for the old Zune but it is also being converted to the Xbox market place. At the moment the only place that still is using the podcasts is the Zune software but it is still very active in curating thanks to Rob Greenly.
Blackberry – This the podcast directory for blackberry phones and is still used by the remaining phone users
Stitcher – Streaming audio app that is growing in popularity and is now being implemented into cars.
Two Thumbs up – made by the same guy who did Podcast pickle so he has been in podcasting for quite a long time.
Common feed problems
Feed will not validate
This is probably the biggest problem podcasters run into. They run their podcast feed through the feed Validator and it comes up saying that it is invalid. Why?
plug in – This is normally the problem when trouble shooting the issue it is best to deactivate all your plug ins except the Power Press and run the validator. if it work, Great! Keep turning on the other plug-ins and revalidating the feed each time till you find the problem plug-in. if not then it could be one of the other issues
Edited with Microsoft word – If you wrote your podcast show notes with Microsoft word then take your show notes and copy and paste them into WordPad then recopy the notes from Word pad and paste them into Word press. More than likely you have some of Microsoft’s special hidden characters in your notes and they are confusing the validator.
Themes – I have only had this happen once and it was an experimental theme I cam across so very very rare that this could be the cause but it has happened before.
Other ways tell our audience of your show
Mailing list – If you have a mailing list this is great! you have an audience and they will help you be noticed in the new and noteworthy section. If you are starting your show with out a web presence like yours truly! then it will take a little more work and determination. Yet, still create a mailing list. This will become invaluable when you start to expand.
How else to find your audience
Use other directories
Go to your audience. If you are doing a podcast about weight loss or health then think where you can find those people like a gym and go talk to these people but don’t sell to them. For this show I go to a lot of forums that talk about podcasting. I go to other social media sites, like Google Plus, Facebook, LinkedIn, and the like and talk to people who are having different problems. So, now it is time to go find your audience and inform them about your show with out selling to them.
Forums are great in a number of ways one you can meet your audience. You get to know what they like and don’t like. But you also get great topics for your show by listening to what your audience is talking about. This gives you a great opportunity to show your expertise. Word of caution, you have to be careful with how and when you mention your show. Have a link in your signature if the forum allows for it but don’t just start throwing your links around you will be marked as a spammer and kicked even banned. Remember this is a community and you need to prove that you have value in this community before you try to sell them on your goods, and you shouldn’t have to try to sell to them they will come to you if you provide enough of a good service.
News of the Week
As thought there was plenty of evidence put forward that podcasting cant be patented. Unlike what Personal Audio LLC was trying to do while extorting money from popular podcasters. on October 16 the Electronic Frontier Foundation issued a formal challenge to the patent held by Personal Audio LLC. with bits of proof that Personal Audio not only doesn’t create a podcast but also podcasts were being created before the U.S. Patent No. 8,112,504 was filed. EFF uses examples like Geek of the Week, CNN and Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. A good deal of the thanks go to the fans of Podcasting. With our them pulling together and working together a fine art might have been lost to a non-producing entity. The Podcasting Community also raised over $76,000 through donations.
